When you finally break down and admit you have an acid reflux problem, the next step is to see your doctor. Chances are that along with a prescription, the doctor is going to take a long hard look at your eating habits and make some changes. You may balk at complying with that diet for acid reflux, especially when the medication seems to be doing the job. But here are a couple of reasons why you should follow that diet for acid reflux to the letter.

The primary purpose of your diet for acid reflux is to create the optimum environment for the prescription medication to do its job. Along with inhibiting the reflux, the medication will also include agents to help repair the damage that is done during prolonged periods of suffering with acid reflux. By following a structured diet for acid reflux, you avoid foods that will provoke further attacks, and often do ingest foods that contain vitamins and nutrients that will in fact support the medication during the healing process. You cannot separate the diet for acid reflux from the usage of the medication. The two must work hand in hand in order for the plan to work properly.

Second, the diet for acid reflux is meant to provide you with new eating habits to replace your old ones. Face up to the fact that you were not eating as well as you should. If you really apply yourself to following the doctor-proscribed diet for acid reflux, you may actually find that the diet plan is not half bad. In fact, the diet for acid reflux may even lead to you having more energy, sleeping better at night, and in general find yourself with a more positive attitude.

Doctors recommend a diet for acid reflux in order to address the problem you are facing now, but also as a means of helping you conduct preventive maintenance of your body. By taking that approach to heart and committing yourself to following that diet for acid reflux, you will only be helping yourself to achieve a higher quality of life.
