If you are one of the millions of people who suffer from intense heartburn day in and day out, then it may be time for you to seek treatment for your severe acid reflux disease. Chances are that you have tried all of the over the counter medicines that your local drug store carries but you have yet to find a good medication that can actually thwart your chronic heartburn. If none of the common over the counter medicines are working for you, perhaps now would be a good time to visit your doctor and see what he can do about your severe acid reflux.

Acid reflux disease, even in its mildest form is an illness that you should not take lightly. Far too many people simply think that their heartburn, although painful, is not potentially harmful in the long term. This misconception has been spread for far too long. In reality, even someone with less than severe acid reflux disease is at risk of permanent esophageal damage and scarring as a result of tender tissue being constantly exposed to harsh stomach acids during an intense episode of heartburn.

Once you consult your doctor, you should ask him for some of the latest (and possibly strongest) anti heartburn prescription medications on the market in order to fully combat your severe acid reflux disease. However, while the pills he gives you will keep your heartburn at bay relatively effectively, you should also consider making a few lifestyle changes in order to stop your heartburn once and for all. For instance, if you find that you eat a lot of spicy or acidic foods, you may want to start cutting back and eating a majority of bland foods that will not necessarily cause your severe acid reflux disease to flare up. Also, sleep in a more upright position with your head elevated to prevent acid from seeping out of your stomach during the night.
